The City of London Cookbook by Peter Gladwin (Accent Press, £12.99)

This unpretending little book is a real smasher. The size of a hardback novel, it has been produced for charity – the Lord Mayor's Appeal – so buy it and you can feel worthy and enjoy a tasty supper at the same time. Peter Gladwin, a chef who has organised many City banquets, solicited recipes from City worthies, top chefs (Gordon Ramsay, Rick Stein), royalty (the Duke of Kent) and politicians (Cameron, Campbell and Livingstone). Despite these strange bedfellows, few cookery books offer quite such a high quotient of really toothsome recipes – I can already recommend Dover Sole with Red Chilli, Coriander and Steamed Bok Choy, and Fillet of Sea Bass with Lemon Risotto, and I am sure that Antony Worrall Thompson's Spotted Dick will appeal to others. Each section is introduced with jolly, name-droppy anecdotes from Gladwin's years of feeding the rich; his deeply un-reconstructed tone, with references to 'lovely ladies' and 'our Oriental friends', probably won't offend the expected readership.
